Interdisciplinary Materials Science

Overview

Jack is a third-year PhD student in the Interdisciplinary Materials Science program in Dr. John Wilson's ImmunoEngineering Lab. His work focuses on designing materials to interact with engineered cells, directing and regulating cellular behavior. One application of interest for this technology is cancer immunotherapy, specifically in targeting tumors that are resistant to current immunotherapy regimens. Jack has mentored undergraduate students through both the VINSE REU and VUSRP summer research programs, with projects ranging from the surface modification of extracellular vesicles to the synthesis of polymers for ligand presentation to engineered cells. Jack graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. As an undergraduate, he worked with the Microtechnology, Medicine, and Biology Lab designing microfluidic tumor-on-a-chip models of renal cell carcinoma and triple-negative breast cancer. Outside of school, Jack enjoys climbing, cooking, and exploring new spots in Tennessee.
