Emma R. Bartelsen

Interdisciplinary Materials Science

Overview

Emma Bartelsen is a graduate student in the Interdisciplinary Materials Science program studying under Dr. Joshua Caldwell. Her research focuses on the confinement of electromagnetic energy at the nano- to atomic-scale and the interactions between light and matter within these confined systems. This includes the sub-diffractional confinement of light using "polaritons" in the optical spectral domain (primarily the infrared), the design of nanoscale optical components, and the identification and characterization of emerging optical, electro-optical, and electronic materials. She is applying these techniques to design gas sensors with increased sensitivity and selectivity.
