VINSE NanoGuides Program
NanoGuides volunteer their time to help inspire the next generation of scientists and cultivate excitement about how nanotechnology can positively impact people’s lives. As a NanoGuide, you’ll gain valuable experience communicating science to the public, connect with others who share your passion for outreach, and receive recognition and rewards for your involvement. NanoGuides do not need to be regular VINSE users as they receive training on the VINSE tools used during outreach events.
How it works
Each semester, VINSE publishes a sign-up sheet where NanoGuides can register for upcoming outreach events. Volunteers can sign up in various roles, including event leader, event assistant, or station host. Popular activities include: Cleanroom Microfluidics, Cleanroom Solar Cell, Analytical Forensics, Blackberry Solar Cell, TN MakerFest, and Friends & Family Day.
NanoGuides are expected to:
Participate in at least one outreach event per academic year
Complete annual Protection of Minors training
Attend required activity-specific training sessions
Program Incentives
NanoGuides receive a variety of benefits in recognition of their contributions:
Recognition on the VINSE website
Free training opportunities in VINSE core facilities
One 3D printed VINSE collectible per event (plus a display tray)
NanoGuide t-shirt (after 2 outreach events)
VINSE North Face backpack (after 5 outreach events)
VINSE branded jacket (after 12 outreach events)
Participation is cumulative—your outreach contributions and incentives will carry forward throughout your time in graduate school.
