Graduate Student Panel Offers Candid Advice to VINSE REU Scholars

As part of the VINSE NSF-REU Professional Development Series, undergraduate researchers had the opportunity to hear directly from current Vanderbilt graduate students during a dynamic and insightful panel discussion this week.

Panelists Jack Loken, Marsalas Whitaker, Elizabeth Hays, Emily Rouse, and Chris Boyd shared their personal journeys to graduate school—offering practical advice. From stories of rejection and perseverance to moments of discovery and success, each speaker highlighted the resilience and clarity needed to navigate the path to a Ph.D.

The panel addressed critical topics such as how to effectively network with potential advisors (and potentially secure application fee waivers), how to identify red flags during campus visits, tips for applying to fellowships, and the importance of self-awareness when choosing a program that fits both academic and personal needs.

We extend our sincere thanks to our panelists for their honesty, encouragement, and commitment to supporting the next generation of scientists.
