Friends,

We are back in full swing welcoming students – new and old – back to campus! We started the month on a high note with our second annual AI Summer School. Over four days, more than 200 participants filled Vanderbilt’s Stevenson Center—undergraduates, PhDs, faculty, staff, and industry leaders—all gathered to advance AI. Our biggest event to date, the numbers tell their own story: 226 t-shirts, 84 gallons of coffee, 720 lunches, 336 trail mix packs, and 256 granola bars. But beyond the snacks and swag, what mattered most were the ideas exchanged and connections made.

Our program balanced breadth and depth. We began with a “Deep Learning Jump Start” on neural network fundamentals and optimization, and moved quickly into advanced explorations of Transformer Tuesdays, large language models, and visual AI. Our esteemed guest lectures covered real-world challenges like data augmentation, troubleshooting, diffusion models, and AI ethics. I extend an extra thanks to our AI Coaches for our new AI Workshop Track turned Stevenson 4327 into a hands-on studio where participants coded side-by-side, iterating through projects on PyTorch, pandas, Docker, and GitHub Copilot—leaving with working notebooks ready to plug into their own research.

For our keynotes, we had the opportunity to connect with Francois Peltier (Nissan) showed how Vanderbilt students delivered $72M in business value through AI partnerships, while Will Croushorn (Wendy’s FreshAI) revealed how generative models are reshaping the drive-thru, one customer interaction at a time. This was also the first year our Industry Affiliate Program joined the mix, support from HP, Tissue Connect Systems, Lenovo, Image Assist, Eqol Institute, Tabsy, and Mindset Integrated, with opportunity to connect with mentors and alumni to sparking new collaborations.

The pop-art theme captured it all (designed by the VALIANT Attempt study group): bold, colorful, and dynamic—just like AI itself. As we plan for 2026, we’ll build in more networking, beginner-friendly tracks, and interactive discovery. This summer school affirmed what makes VALIANT special: a community of learners, innovators, and partners working side-by-side to shape the future of AI.

Alumni Lookout: Scaling Curiosity from MRI Suites to Millions of Merchants

From troubleshooting MRI analysis at Vanderbilt to steering Shopify’s data strategy, Andrew Plassard (PhD ’17) shows how Vanderbilt‑grown curiosity ignites industry‑scale AI.

GPU budgets hint at the scope of his work: “We tend to light a good amount of GPU on fire in any given month, and there’s a constant struggle of saying, okay, how many GPUs do we need this month?” Efficiency increasingly comes from innovative models, such as Meta’s event‑based Hierarchical Sequential Transformer Units, which let his team convert clickstreams into tailored onboarding tips without weeks of feature engineering. Generative tools remove roadblocks too: “I no longer need to write SQL, for the most part, in my day‑to‑day life.”

Eight years in tech have clarified what turns insight into impact. “Having the best idea doesn’t matter… if you’re not able to present that and market it,” Andrew says. Today, success means translating ideas into production‑ready code: “Good general data work has gone from this research science‑y first mentality to engineering problems,” where progress depends on “writing really, really crisp and good code.”

AI’s reach keeps widening. Andrew keeps a browser tab open to Shopify’s internal AI hub: “I have every LLM imaginable available to me,” he notes. Those models power quick experiments—querying databases through natural language and launching prototypes in hours. And the workflow is only getting smarter: “Agentic workflows are great… being able to see a problem and… structure a basic prompt to a solution has been really transformative.”

That kind of judgment—knowing what matters in a sea of data—was something Andrew first practiced at Vanderbilt. “I brought some numbers into your [Landman’s] office,” he recalls, “and you said: do these numbers make sense?” Andrew needed to check them against a broader population. That lesson stuck. “So much of good problem solving is being able to bring in the right context… to better frame a discussion.” It was part of a culture where “we were in such a collaborative environment that we were able to see work from different areas—computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, physics, psychology—and get all these ideas.” Whether parsing MRIs or sifting billions of shopping‑cart events, that curiosity remains Andrew’s most scalable asset.

Looking back, Andrew says he still misses walking Vanderbilt’s campus and the energy of being surrounded by people doing passionate, interdisciplinary work. “You never remember the downs,” he reflects, “just the time you spent working on really weird problems you wouldn’t have expected.”

  • Prof. Zhongliang Zu received two new NIH grants combining AI and imaging: Developing a Novel Machine Learning Method with Partially Synthetic Data for Rapid and Precise pH Mapping in Ischemic Stroke and Advancing Machine Learning for CEST MRI Analysis through Partially Synthetic Data.

New US-UK Collaborations

Prof. Yuankai Huo and Prof. Yalin Zheng’s “Launching the Vanderbilt–Liverpool Eye-AI Working Group: A Transatlantic Collaboration in Multimodal Medical Imaging AI,” has been selected for Liverpool-Vanderbilt Joint Research Seed funding. The Office of the Provost will support this research collaborations with the University of Liverpool.

We’re excited to wrap up the VALIANT Pulse summer podcast series — a collaboration between VALIANT and  Gemini. Each short, AI-assisted, human-curated episode translates cutting-edge scientific research into engaging stories for a broader audience. Available on Spotify, Amazon, iHeartRadio, or whereever podcasts are found. (This week features work by Drs. Maldonado, Sandler, and Landman: “Count on AI: Tracking Mpox with Prevision”.) As we reflect on this experiment, feedback is welcome to consider our communication channels.
