The educational organizations in Middle TN are diverse, including 12 Colleges of Applied Technology, four community colleges, six state universities, and 17 private colleges and universities. Four of these institutions are defined as rural-serving, and the region is also home to four of TN’s six Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). While Middle TN is the state’s research powerhouse, the distribution of research performance in the region is severely asymmetrical, presenting an excellent opportunity for M-TRAIN to initiate a dedicated and intensive pursuit of equity across research institutions in Middle TN, which can serve as a model for regions across the nation.
