History: Named after Frank Armstrong Crawford Vanderbilt (1839–1885), the second wife of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. She was credited with influencing her husband to make the foundational $1 million donation to establish the university in 1873.

History: Originally Confederate Memorial Hall, built in 1935 (named for Confederate veterans; “Confederate” was removed from official use in 2016). The name “Memorial Hall” is intended to honor all who have lost their lives in armed conflicts of the United States.

History: One of the first residence halls on the Peabody campus. Rising costs for room and board after World War I prevented many students from attending, which prompted Peabody to build this residence hall.

History: Named after John H. Stambaugh, who served as the vice chancellor for business affairs at the university from 1956 to 1962. He was also a key figure in the establishment of the Ingram Book Group and worked in foreign economic policy during the Eisenhower administration

History: Named for Earl W. Sutherland Jr., a Nobel Prize-winning professor of physiology. Sutherland was a faculty member at Vanderbilt from 1963 until his death in 1974, He is known for his work on the mechanisms of hormone actions, particularly epinephrine
