February 2026 — New Publication in Learning and Instruction
We’re pleased to share a new Learning and Instruction publication led by Joyce Horn Fonteles, with collaborators from Vanderbilt University and Indiana University: Analyzing embodied learning in classroom settings: A human-in-the-loop AI approach for multimodal learning analytics. This work presents a human-in-the-loop framework that combines multimodal classroom data with deep learning and an LLM to support multimodal learning analytics in embodied learning scenarios.
February 2026 — Seven ISLS Papers, Posters, and Demos Accepted
We are excited to share that seven OELE papers, posters, and demos have been accepted to the 2026 International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS) conference. These projects reflect collaborations with partner institutions—including University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, and Indiana University—with Vanderbilt lead authors Namrata Srivastava, Shruti Jain, Ashwin T. S., and Sarah K. Burriss working alongside OELE teammates and external colleagues.
December 2025 — Three Papers Accepted to LAK
Our team is proud to announce that three OELE papers were accepted to the 2026 Learning Analytics & Knowledge (LAK) conference. These contributions were developed in partnership with researchers at University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, Indiana University, University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon University, New York University, and University of Detroit Mercy, with OELE authors Clayton Cohn, Joyce Horn Fonteles, and Namrata Srivastava leading from the Vanderbilt side.
December 2025 — Two I/ITSEC Best Paper Awards
Congratulations to Surya Rayala and Divya Mereddy on earning Best Paper awards at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC). Surya received the Best Paper Award from the Human Performance Analysis and Engineering (HPAE) subcommittee, in collaboration with partners from the United States Army. Divya received the Best Paper Award from the Training subcommittee, in collaboration with colleagues from the United States Air Force. These recognitions highlight exceptional contributions to training, performance, and simulation research.
November 2025 — AAAI Main Technical Track Acceptance
We’re excited to announce that Clayton Cohn and his OELE co-authors have a paper accepted to the AAAI-26 Main Technical Track. Titled A Theory of Adaptive Scaffolding for LLM-Based Pedagogical Agents, the work will be presented at one of the leading international AI conferences, reflecting OELE’s continued contribution to the intersection of artificial intelligence and the learning sciences.
July 2025 — Dissertation Defense
Congratulations to Eduardo Davalos on successfully defending his doctoral thesis, From Process to Outcome: Bridging Gaze, Behavior, and Performance for Evidence-Informed Literacy Education. We celebrate this major milestone and look forward to his continued impact in the field as a professor at Trinity University.
