Captain Erickson hails from Devils Lake, North Dakota and is a 1991 graduate of Devils Lake High School. He attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating with merit in May 1995, earning a B.S. in Computer Science. He also holds a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from Naval Command and Staff College in Newport, RI. He entered flight training in Pensacola, FL and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in October of 1996.

Upon completion of initial P-3C "Orion" training, Captain Erickson's operational assignments have spanned both coasts, completing flying tours with the VP-26 "Tridents" and VP-10 "Red Lancers" homeported in Brunswick, ME. At sea he commanded Task Force SEVEN TWO, the Maritime Aviation commander in the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean in support of US SEVENTH Fleet and also served as Commander, Fleet Air Western Pacific directing air logistics, aviation intermediate maintenance and aviation supply from Bahrain to Guam. He served as the Commanding Officer of the VP-47 "Golden Swordsmen" in Kaneohe Bay, HI leading a multi-site deployment in support of 4th, 5th and 6th Fleets and earning the Pacific Fleet 2013 Battle "E" and Safety "S". Additionally, he served as a Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer ("Shooter") onboard USS NIMITZ (CVN-68) homeported in San Diego, CA. During these operational assignments Captain Erickson has deployed in support of every numbered fleet across the globe and in support of numerous named operations.

Ashore, Captain Erickson's assignments include tours as an Instructor Tactical Coordinator at the Maritime Patrol Fleet Replacement Squadron (VP-30) in Jacksonville, FL, as an Action Officer on the Joint Staff in the Operations Directorate (J-3) at the Pentagon, as the Aviation Captain and Maritime Patrol Commander Assignments Officer at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, TN, and as a Secretary of Defense Executive Fellow at Apple in Cupertino, CA.

Captain Erickson's current assignment is as Professor of Naval Science at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.

In his career, Captain Erickson has accumulated over 3,000 flight hours and his personal awards include the Legion of Merit (2), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2), Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (3), and Navy Achievement Medal (3). He is married to the former Miss Erika Johnson and they have three children: Liam (16), Finn (14), and Addison (12).
