Learning Design

Guides and best practices for designing engaging, evidence-based online learning experiences.

  • Support for Course Development

Faculty are supported in course development by instructional designers who serve as collaborative partners, combining expertise in learning science with knowledge of Vanderbilt's academic culture. Through 1:1 consultations and direct course building within Brightspace, designers help faculty re-imagine their courses in an online environment. This partnership ensures alignment with institutional standards and peer best practices while reducing faculty workload.

  • Timeline for Course Development
The average timeline for a three-credit graduate course is four to five months. Similar to peer institutions, we estimate that faculty invest five to ten hours per week in design and content creation, then one to two hours during final course quality assurance.
