From Study Abroad to Counseling Psychology

Immersion Vanderbilt Faculty Adviser: Leigh Wadsworth-Scheer

Pathway: Study Abroad

Carmen Rosado (Cognitive Studies, Communication of Science and Technology, '26) discovered her passion for cross-cultural psychology through her study abroad experiences in Japan and Copenhagen. Learning about intercultural communication and cross-cultural counseling while living abroad gave her firsthand insight into how culture shapes identity, relationships, and behavior. These experiences helped her connect her longstanding interest in people and psychology to a clear academic and professional path.

Working with Peabody College faculty adviser Dr. Wadsworth-Scheer, Carmen created a multimedia project exploring intercultural communication through both research and personal reflection. Her Immersion Vanderbilt experience ultimately inspired her pursuit of a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Auburn University, where she will study how culture influences human development, relationships, and well-being.

Learning about cross-cultural counseling abroad was essential in understanding my passions within psychology and future career goals!
