Global Scholars in Residence Program

The Global Scholars in Residence program provides financial support to faculty seeking to host a visiting scholar or group of scholars from a recognized non-U.S. institution of higher education or other non-U.S. non-profit educational and/or research-mission driven entity.

The Global Scholars in Residence program will:

  • Engage with the mission of discovery by enabling collaboration between the visiting scholar, Vanderbilt faculty and students, including undergraduate, graduate, or professional students.
  • Foster ongoing collaboration with the visiting scholar’s home institution and country
  • Create opportunities for Vanderbilt faculty and students to discover abroad. 
  • Provide support for transportation, on-campus events, and room and board for the duration of the visiting scholar’s stay (with a minimum stay of 4 days and maximum stay of 4 weeks).
  • Categories of Support

    The Office of the Chancellor and Office of the Provost will provide foundational support for the Vanderbilt Global Scholars in Residence program. This includes:

    • Direct payment of air and ground travel expenses up to $1,200.
    • Provision of housing for Global Scholars in the West End Tower for the duration of the visit
    • Coverage of the cost of a full meal plan in Vanderbilt dining halls.

    Funds can also be used to pay for on-campus signature event. The sponsoring school/college or department will be expected to contribute to the costs, including any expenses not covered by the approved funds, such as honoraria.

  • Eligibility and Requirements
    1. All full-time, VU-employed (Provost-reporting) faculty are eligible. Staff, students and post-docs are ineligible.
    2. Faculty must confirm that prospective Global Scholars are committed to visit before applying.
    3. Faculty may carry out the proposed hosting duties individually or collaboratively across multiple schools/colleges/departments.
    4. Global Scholars must have a full-time appointment at a recognized non-U.S. institution of higher education or other non-profit educational and/or research-mission driven entity.
    5. Global Scholars must actively engage with undergraduate, graduate, or professional students. This engagement could be through the residential college community (e.g., fireside chats; meals with college heads of house and students, etc.) in collaboration with the faculty head of house.
    6. Global Scholars must be in dialogue and collaboration with Vanderbilt faculty. Collaboration can include presentations across departments, and evidence of past and commitments to future engagement with Vanderbilt faculty.
    7. The visit will foster ongoing exchange and interaction with the visitor’s institution and home country and is expected to lead to opportunities for Vanderbilt faculty and students to be hosted there.
  • Guidelines for Review

    Proposals that include the following criteria will be viewed favorably:

    • It lays the foundation for a collaborative, multi-nation grant
    • It includes Vanderbilt faculty proposers from multiple schools/colleges and/or departments.
    • It engages faculty across rank and tenure status.
    • It includes plans for a signature event that occurs on campus and includes faculty and students.
    • It reflects a meaningful investment from the proposers’ school/college/department.
  • Additional Requirements
    • Budgets for all proposals must follow the template provided.
    • Proposals must include draft itinerary and metrics for success.
    • Applicants are required to consult with Julie Wilbers, Director of International Student and Scholar Services, prior to submitting their application to confirm terms of visa status and realistic timeframes.
  • Proposal Process

    All proposals must be submitted online using InfoReady Review, Vanderbilt’s online submissions portal, or by clicking the "Apply Now" button on this page.

    Information to include in your proposal:

    • Proposal title
    • General description of the visit
    • Proposed dates of stay
    • Name(s) of hosts/collaborators for visiting scholar
    • Information on proposed visiting scholar, including name, short bio, CV, and visa requirements.
    • Description of the scholarly/creative work of the proposed visiting scholar
    • Draft itinerary for visit
    • Budget overview (using template provided) with detailed description of how funds will be used
    • Measures of Success & Project Evaluation– Discuss goals, expected impact and/or related deliverables, and methods that will be used to determine if project goals have been achieved (metrics of success)
  • Funding Guidelines
    • Funds can be used to cover direct payment of air and ground travel expenses up to $1,200.
    • Funds can be used to pay for on-campus events including a signature event (50 attendees max).
    • Funds will cover the costs of the West End Tower room.
    • Funds will cover the cost of a full meal plan in Vanderbilt dining halls during the length of the visitor’s stay in the West End Tower.
    • Funds cannot be paid directly to the visitor.
    • For groups of visiting scholars, full funding cannot be guaranteed.
    • The sponsoring department/school will be expected to contribute to the costs.
    • Any expenses not detailed above, such as honoraria, will be covered by the schools/departments or the visitor.
