Ty Painter
What is your hometown? Pottsville, PA
What is your educational background? I graduated from Shippensburg University as a double major in Management Information Systems and Finance with a concentration in Personal Financial Planning.
What is your working experience, if any? I worked as a Business Analyst for Perspecta to help improve and develop Medicare claim processing systems.
Why data science? I took an Introduction to Data Science course my senior year of college and that sparked my interest. I have always enjoyed coding and working with numbers and this allowed me to do both at the same time. I find satisfaction in taking in a large dataset, finding useful information, and then displaying my findings in a way that others can interpret and find useful.
Why did you choose Vanderbilt? Vanderbilt is a world-renowned and highly respected institution across the globe, which will open numerous doors of opportunity for its students. I liked the fact that Vanderbilt had its own department dedicated to the students in the DSI. This provides us with all the necessary resources to succeed in the classroom and beyond. The curriculum is well-rounded and exposes its students to a variety of components in the data science field. Also, Nashville is a growing business city that can provide us with a variety of job/internship choices.
What are your hobbies / what do you enjoy doing outside of work and academics? I played college baseball and love all sports. I enjoy cooking and trying all different types of foods, reading the Wall Street Journal, and playing golf whenever I have some free time.
