Residential Education Staff

We're Here for You!

At Vanderbilt, a housing staff member is available to assist residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Support ranges from providing simple information about the location of classrooms, to offering advice and counseling about personal issues, and even assisting in emergency or crisis situations.

Our 34 residence halls are organized into seven "Residential Areas", each managed by an Associate Director (AD), an Area Coordinator (AC), and maintained by an Area Maintenance Supervisor (AMS). The Residential Education staff also includes upperclass undergraduates and graduate students who serve as head residents (HRs) and resident advisers (RAs) in our undergraduate residence halls. These students are supervised by the seven ACs, all of whom live in residence halls and report to the Associate Directors who also live on campus.

Residential Education Staff Roles

Associate Directors

Reporting to the Senior Director of Residential Education, the Associate Directors are responsible for coordinating community programming and recruitment of student staff. The Associate Directors live in residence halls on campus, are equipped with cell phones, and are on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Area Coordinators

Under the supervision of our Associate Directors, the Area Coordinators are responsible for all the residence halls in their assigned areas. The ACs live in their areas, are equipped with cell phones, and are on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

In addition to supervising the Head Residents, Resident Advisers and Reeves in their residence halls, the Area Coordinator is also available to:

  • respond to emergencies in the residence halls, Greek houses and students off-campus
  • accompany sick and injured students to the emergency room
  • advise residence hall governments
  • counsel individual students
  • promote and assist in the planning of residence hall programming
  • investigate and resolve student disciplinary matters.

Area Coordinators are full-time professional staff members who hold post-baccalaureate degrees.

Area Maintenance Supervisors

Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities, the Area Maintenance Supervisors (AMSes) coordinate maintenance of all the residence halls in their areas. The AMSes are vital parts of the residence hall community and performs a variety of daily functions that maintain a healthy, safe, and supportive learning and living environment for the residents.

Head Residents

Head Residents are Vanderbilt graduate students or returning undergraduates who have overall responsibility for one of the residence halls in their areas. Head Residents are live-in supervisors of the resident adviser staffs and also serve as advisors to hall councils.

Resident Advisors

Resident Advisors are Vanderbilt students living in each residence hall. These students are carefully selected for their leadership ability, interpersonal skills, and desire to enhance the residence hall community. They undergo extensive training prior to the start of the academic year. RAs assist students with personal and academic concerns and serve as resources to residents by serving as liaisons between the University and students. They plan and promote social, educational, and academic hall programs that contribute to the overall education of residents. These programs may include group discussions, guest speakers, and trips to cultural events.

Reeves

Reeves are Vanderbilt students who work at desks located at the front entrance of each residence hall and serve as resource persons for residents and guests. Most reeve desks are staffed twenty-four hours a day during the academic year. Reeves act as a source of information for visitors, observe the flow of students and their guests into the buildings, monitor the fire and door alarm panels and notify the appropriate individuals when an alarm is activated. Reeves are authorized to call RAs or VUPD in emergency situations.
