Residence Life Staff

We're Here for You!

At Vanderbilt, a housing staff member is available to assist residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Support ranges from providing simple information about the location of classrooms, to offering advice and counseling about personal issues, and even assisting in emergency or crisis situations.

Our 30 residence halls are organized into seven "Residential Areas", each managed by an Assistant Director, and maintained by an Area Maintenance Supervisor. The Residence Life staff also includes upperclass undergraduates and graduate students who serve as resident Advisors and head residents in our undergraduate residence halls. These students are supervised by the seven Assistant Directors, all of whom live in residence halls and report the Director of Resident Life, who also lives on campus.

Residence Life Staff Roles

Assistant Director

Under the supervision of our Director of Resident Life, the Assistant Director is responsible for all the residence halls in the Area. The Assistant Director actually lives in the Area, is pager-equipped, and is on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

In addition to supervising the Head Residents, Resident Advisors and Reeves in their residence halls, the Assistant Director is also available to:

  • respond to emergencies in the residence halls, Greek houses and students off-campus
  • accompany sick and injured students to the emergency room
  • advise hall governments
  • counsel individual students
  • promote and assist in the planning of residence hall programming
  • monitor student conduct at home athletic events
  • investigate and resolve student disciplinary matters.

Assistant Directors are full-time professional staff members who hold advanced degrees in such areas as student personnel, law, and deaf education.

Area Maintenance Supervisor

Under the supervision of our Director of Facilities, the Area Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the maintenance of all the residence halls in the Area. The Area Maintenance Supervisor is a vital part of the residence hall community and performs a variety of daily functions that maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable learning and living environment for the residents.

Head Residents

Head Residents are Vanderbilt graduate students or returning undergraduate staff members who have overall responsibility for one of the residence halls in the Area. Head Residents are live-in supervisors of the resident adviser staffs and also serve as Advisors to hall councils.

Resident Advisors

Resident Advisors are Vanderbilt juniors, seniors, or graduate students living in each residence hall. These students have been carefully selected for their leadership ability, interpersonal skills, and desire to enhance the residence hall community, and they undergo extensive training prior to the start of the academic year. RAs assist students with personal and academic concerns and act as resource persons to residents by serving as liaisons between the University and students. They plan and promote social, educational, and academic hall programs that contribute to the overall education of residents. These programs may include group discussions, guest speakers, and trips to cultural events.

Reeves

Reeves are Vanderbilt students who work at desks located at the front entrance of each residence hall and serve as resource persons for residents and guests. Most Reeve desks are staffed twenty-four hours a day during the academic year. Reeves act as a source of information for visitors, observe the flow of students and their guests into the buildings, monitor the fire and door alarm panels and notify the appropriate individuals when an alarm is activated. Reeves are authorized to call RAs or VUPD in emergency situations.
