Residence Hall Autonomy
Under the auspices of Interhall, students learn the
basic principles of democratic self-governance. Residents are permitted to determine
some of the rules and regulations under which they, as a community, must live.
Residents learn to accept responsibility for their actions and to help in the
enforcement of rules and regulations which govern the daily life of their residential
community.
Student residents may vote to alter the following regulations:
- Visitation in residents' rooms by members of the opposite sex is permissible 24 hours per day.
- Individual resident hosts must accept disciplinary and financial responsibility for their guests.
- Attendance at residence hall meetings is required, and the elected officers will set times for
these meetings in consultation with building staff.
- Quiet hours shall be enforced from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and midnight
through 10 a.m., Friday and Saturday. (During exam week, quiet hours are in effect 24 hours per day.)
- Condom vending machines will be installed and stocked in all undergraduate residence halls as practicable.
These regulations will be in effect until the residents of a unit (floor or building) vote to change them.
In order to amend autonomy regulations for your unit:
- you must present InterHall with a petition signed by at least 15% of
the residents of your unit
- a vote must be held by ballot
- at least two-thirds of the residents of your unit must vote for the change.
Freshmen may vote
to alter their autonomy regulations thirty days after the fall semester begins.
All autonomy decisions must be approved by the Assistant Vice-Chancellor of Housing
and Residential Education.
