Options for Room Selection

Local Selections

  • Open only to students entering their 3rd or greater year of study in fall 2008.
Students in their first year may not reserve their currently assigned single or double rooms.
  • Stay in the same room
Upperclass students living in single and double rooms have the opportunity to reserve their currently assigned rooms in the local selection processes held by individual buildings prior to the general random selection.
  • Stay in the same building
Upperclass students wanting to select a new room in the building where they currently reside may also do so in the local selection processes.

The purpose of the Local Selections is to help build and sustain a residential community and to provide continuity of leadership.

Suite/Apartment Reservations

Upperclass students living in suites and apartments may also reserve their currently assigned suite or apartment, as long as they meet the guidelines.
  • Carmichael Towers Suites
3 out of 6 current residents must return.
  • Mayfield Lodges
5 out of 10 current residents must return. Mayfield Living/Learning Lodges may not reserve their current lodges.
  • Morgan and Lewis Apartments
Efficiencies: 2 out of 2 current residents must return. 1-Bedrooms: 2 out of 2 current residents must return. 2-Bedrooms: 2 out of 3 current residents must return.
  • Chaffin Place
3out of 4 current residents must return.

    Living/Learning Centers

Students may apply to live in one of Vanderbilt's living/learning centers. The application process for these centers occurs prior to the regular housing selection processes. Students whose applications are denied may still participate, without penalty, in the regular housing selection process.

    Year-round Housing
    for International Students

International students may apply for year-round housing in Carmichael Tower East or Lewis House. The application process for year-round housing is held prior to the general random selection.

    General Random Selection

All rooms still available after the living/learning center application process, the year-round housing selection, apartment reservations, and local selections will be assigned in the general random selections.

The general random selection process is based on a system of seniority points where students with greater seniority have greater points. Students with greater points select rooms before students with fewer points. When there is a tie in points, the tie is broken by a random selection procedure referred to by students as "the lottery.":

    • Seniority
Students entering their 4th year or greater of study in fall 2008 will have 4 points. Students entering their 3rd year or greater of study in fall 2008 will have 3 points. Students entering their 2nd year or greater of study in fall 2008 will have 2 points. Groups of students are awarded group point totals which are determined by summing the points assigned to each member of the group. The order of selection for groups with the same point total is determined by a random selection.
