Swipes for a Cause is a student-driven initiative in partnership with Vanderbilt Campus Dining that allows students to donate unused meal resources to help combat food insecurity in the greater Nashville area. Through this program, students can contribute meal money or guest meals, which are used to provide food to those in need through Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.

How It Works

Vanderbilt students can donate in two ways:

Meal Money Donations

Each undergraduate meal plan includes a semesterly allotment of Meal Money, which can be used at various dining locations on campus. Students can donate any portion of their meal money directly to Swipes for a Cause. These funds are then provided to Second Harvest, enabling the organization to purchase the most needed food items for distribution.

Guest Meal Donations

Undergraduate meal plans also include five guest meals per semester, which students can choose to donate. These meals are converted into shelf-stable entrees and sides from Vanderbilt’s Munchie Marts and delivered to Second Harvest Food Bank, where they are distributed to families and individuals in need.

About Second Harvest Food Bank

Established in 1978, Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee serves as a critical resource in the fight against hunger. The organization works with approximately 460 partner agencies across 46 counties, including:

  • Food pantries
  • Soup kitchens
  • Homeless shelters
  • Childcare and senior centers
  • Group homes
  • Youth programs

Through these partnerships, Second Harvest distributes millions of pounds of food each year, ensuring that donated meals and funds from Vanderbilt students directly support local families facing food insecurity.

How to Donate

Students can easily donate to Swipes for a Cause through the GET app or the GET website. The process is simple and allows students to make a meaningful impact with just a few clicks.
