When and where are auditions?

The VCC auditions new members in August and sometimes in January.  Unfortunately, we are not always able to add sopranos or altos due to balance and space availability.   We encourage anyone who is interested to audition, however, please note that music reading ability is a prerequisite.

Auditions take place in David Williams’ office (Room 3157) at the Blair School of Music, 2400 Blakemore Avenue, Nashville, TN, 37212.  Parking is available after 5pm on weekdays in the West Garage across Children’s Way from the main Blair entrance.  Free parking is available in the South Garage at the northeast corner of Children’s Way and 24th Ave. S.   It is easiest to find room 3157 if you enter the building on the west side (which faces 25th Ave. South and the practice fields) instead of the main entrance.  Then take the stairs or elevator to the third floor.

What does an audition entail?

After filling out some paperwork, auditions typically begin with warmups.  You will then be asked to sing the melody of a familiar tune (such as “My Country Tis of Thee”) while I accompany you on the piano.  Words and music are provided.  Next you will sight read your voice part (soprano/alto/tenor/bass) in a simple four-part texture on a neutral vowel (such as “nah”) while I play along as needed.  Lastly, I will ask you to “tah” some simple rhythmic exercises.   Auditions usually last about 20 minutes and I try to make them as enjoyable and stress-free as possible!

If you are interested in auditioning, please contact David Williams, VCC director, at david.b.williams@vanderbilt.edu.
