Frequently Asked Questions

  • What survey questions are included in the Data Playground?

    The Data Playground features questions from the core AmericasBarometer questionnaire — items asked in most countries and survey rounds, so results can be compared reliably across countries and over time. The tool currently includes data from 2004 to 2023; an updated version featuring 2026 data will be released alongside the 2026 AmericasBarometer report on September 9. Not every question appears in every country or round — to confirm whether a specific question was asked in a given round or country, check the official AmericasBarometer questionnaires — view the core questionnaire, or select a country to see its country-specific version.

    Within the tool, you can customize your analysis by selecting from a menu of available variables, filtering responses, and exploring patterns by survey round, country, demographic group, or other survey questions.

  • What types of analysis can I do with the Data Playground?

    You can generate histograms for individual questions, track time series trends across survey rounds, and compare responses across countries. You can also run crosstabulations, analyzing an outcome variable by demographic group or another survey question, choosing specific countries and rounds for each figure.

    The Data Playground focuses on descriptive statistics; it doesn't run more advanced analyses like regression models that account for multiple variables at once, so results highlight patterns and differences without explaining why they occur.

  • Are these weighted or unweighted data?

    Weighted. Responses are scaled so each country-year represents 1,500 respondents, ensuring comparability across countries and over time. Some country-years also include poststratification weights to align the sample with population distributions on region, urban/rural residence, sex, age, education, and/or wealth.

  • Can I download the graphs and data I create?

    Yes. Use the buttons at the bottom of the tool to save a graph as an image file or export the underlying data as a CSV.
