Hometown: Gallatin, TN
School: Peabody College of Education
Major(s): Human and Organizational Development
Minors(s): Economics

Alexis Cook is a rising senior at Vandy majoring in Human and Organizational Development with a minor in Economics. She has extensive experience in non-profit volunteering and internships and cross-cultural engagement. Alexis is very interested in poverty alleviation and hopes to use her interest in Economics to create a more equitable world.

This past year, Alexis contracted Lyme Disease from a tick bite and had to take a semester off from school. During that time, she was able to deepen her connections in the homeless community of Nashville, her hometown, by simply wandering downtown and taking time to get to know others. By developing genuine friendships with those who are different from herself, she’s been able to hone in on her passions and hopes to go into social enterprise and impact investment upon graduation.

The past three years at Vanderbilt, Alexis has been very active on and off-campus. She has served in leadership roles on student government and Grassroots, an umbrella organization that connects students to surrounding nonprofits. Additionally, Alexis has volunteered in an array of organizations, including Thistle Farms, the Sexual Assault Center of Nashville, Preston Taylor Ministries, Worker’s Dignity, and Mercury Courts Transitional Homes.

Before attending Vanderbilt, Alexis took a gap year, where she worked in five different non-profit internships in five different countries: the US, Haiti, Rwanda, Jordan, and the Philippines. Through her experiences thus far, she has found a deeper love of humanity, a desire to empower others, and a humility in recognizing her limitations.

Alexis is incredibly thankful to the Ingram family and those who have made the program feel like a family. She is honored to be part of such an inspiring group.
