Rev. Edward A. Malloy, C.S.C.

A member of the Holy Cross religious order and a trustee since 1999, Reverend Edward A. Malloy (known by all as Father “Monk” Malloy) earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Notre Dame and a second master’s degree, in theology, in 1969 while studying for the priesthood. He was ordained in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame campus in 1970. One of the first two priests to enroll in the Vanderbilt Divinity School, he received his Ph.D. in Christian ethics in 1975.

Rev. Malloy was the president of the University of Notre Dame from 1987 until June 2005. In 1998, Vanderbilt Divinity School established a Catholic Studies Chair in Rev. Malloy’s honor. Rev. Malloy holds twenty-five honorary degrees.
Rev. Malloy has been recognized by several prominent Irish-American organizations and is a recipient of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Balfour Silver Anniversary Award, given to former varsity basketball players who have distinguished themselves in civic leadership and service.

He is a past chairman of the American Council on Education and served formerly on the board of directors for the NCAA Foundation, the International Federation of Catholic Universities, and Campus Compact. He is on the Board of Governors of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and is on the board of directors of CASA (The National Center of Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University).
