Programs and Grants

The James Lawson Institute is home to several academic and community centered opportunities and programs, which are committed to advancing dialogue and knowledge of nonviolent movements and transforming the next generation now. The JLI is also committed to providing students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of nonviolent movement strategies and teachings, conduct research to elevate communities and organizations to bring about social justice and integrate their findings into their education at Vanderbilt University.

Youth advocacy network

Vanderbilt University’s James Lawson Institute for the Research and Study of Nonviolent Movements are partnering with students in local colleges and universities as well as local high schools to support the community’s need for knowledgeable and practical nonviolent leaders for social justice work.

Mentee program purpose:

  • Using Rev. James Lawson’s four step methodology of nonviolent practice, the mentee’s will learn techniques, gain guidance, and become well equipped to navigate in their communities with social justice as a foundation.
  • Support youth in Nashville to become leaders in social justice.
  • Build a bridge between the Institute and the Nashville community, creating a larger impact beyond Vanderbilt University.
Fellows grant

The purpose of The James Lawson Institute Fellows Grant is to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of nonviolent movement strategies and teachings, conduct research to elevate communities and organizations to bring about social justice and integrate their findings into their education at Vanderbilt University. Awardees will participate and support one another as members of the cohort of grantees.

The application cycle opens August 15, 2023. The application deadline is 5:00pm CST on Friday, September 29, 2023. All applications must be submitted via email to jameslawsoninstitute@vanderbilt.edu.
