Corequisite Developmental Education in Texas: The Impact of Course Structure and Intensity

Will Doyle will be hosting the LPO talk with FSU Professors Toby Park-Gaghan, PhD and Christine Mokher, PhD.

In recent years, corequisite developmental education (DE) has seen a surge of attention and support.  These models permit students to enroll directly in introductory college-level English, reading-intensive, and mathematics courses while providing them with DE support at the same time through corequisite models.  In 2017, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 2223, effectively mandating that corequisites be the primary DE model at all public institutions.  Our previous research demonstrated that more students are taking and passing college-level English and math courses now that corequisite courses are the required method of DE instruction, with the greatest acceleration effects for Black and Hispanic students. Now, we probe deeper into the corequisite courses themselves to see what might be driving this increase in student success. Texas permits individual institutions to decide how to offer corequisite course option in terms of both structure/format and intensity (the number of credits per course). In this session, representatives from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and education policy researchers will present findings on outcomes for students in corequisite DE courses, disaggregated by course structure and intensity, including reflections gleaned from virtual site visits.

University Counseling Center (UCC) Drop-in Consultation for International and APIDA-identifying Students

UCC Drop-In Consultation provides easy access to informal, confidential, and free consultations with University Counseling Center counselors.

UCC Drop-In Consultation is generally helpful for students who 1) are not sure about counseling and wonder what it’s like to talk with a counselor, 2) may not be interested in ongoing therapy but would like the perspective of a counselor, 3) have a specific problem and would like to talk it through with a counselor, or 4) have a concern about a friend and want some thoughts about what to do.

Students who are experiencing an immediate mental health emergency are encouraged to attend UCC Urgent Care, instead of Drop-In Consultation. For any questions about UCC Drop-In Consultation, please call 615-322-2571.

Every Tuesday
2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
