UPCOMING:

The George Eastman Lecture: Bad bets, bad apples, or bad policy? Should ordeals be a policy tool of the twenty-first century?

Visiting Professor Carolyn Heinrich, (Leadership, Policy & Organization)
gives the George Eastman Lecture, introduced by Professor Ngaire Woods.
“Ordeals” are a tool of public policy that have been used in public programmes to screen out potential programme beneficiaries who are considered “bad bets”—those who benefit too little to warrant the public expenditures—and “bad apples,” those who are viewed as undeserving for reasons of irresponsible, immoral, or illegal behaviour. A rapidly expanding body of research that I will describe in this lecture—including my own work in three different policy areas that applies various methodologies—has investigated how these ordeals or burdens are enacted, experienced and distributed, with both intended and unintended consequences. In fact, there is growing consensus that the costs imposed by ordeals tend to be more difficult to bear for those who are most in need of the public programmes, contributing to delays in or denials of access to public benefits that can lead to long-term, life-altering consequences.

Above and beyond their assigned responsibilities, these women have encouraged our students, been a listening ear and even cried with our students.  This panel will elevate their important roles to our Peabody community. University Counseling Center (UCC) Drop-in Consultation for International and APIDA-identifying Students

UCC Drop-In Consultation provides easy access to informal, confidential, and free consultations with University Counseling Center counselors.

UCC Drop-In Consultation is generally helpful for students who 1) are not sure about counseling and wonder what it’s like to talk with a counselor, 2) may not be interested in ongoing therapy but would like the perspective of a counselor, 3) have a specific problem and would like to talk it through with a counselor, or 4) have a concern about a friend and want some thoughts about what to do.

Students who are experiencing an immediate mental health emergency are encouraged to attend UCC Urgent Care, instead of Drop-In Consultation. For any questions about UCC Drop-In Consultation, please call 615-322-2571.

Every Tuesday
2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Peabody Administration Building Heritage Room 218B.

UCC Drop-In Consultation hours at Peabody are specifically for APIDA (Asian Pacific Islander Desi American) students and/or International students who wish to receive brief support around concerns which may be impacted by their identities, in an overtly affirming space.
