CSEO Professional Development Series: Neurodiversity in the Classroom with David Caudel, PhD

Dr. Caudel is the Associate Director of The Frist Center for Autism and Innovation. In this session, Dr. Caudel will discuss neurodiversity in the classroom. He will discuss how to best create an inclusive environment for neurodiverse (e.g., ADHD, ASD, dyslexia) students, focusing mainly on the needs of those in middle and high school learning environments.

From Vincent Chin to #STOPAAPIHATE with Helen Zia on 40+ Years of Asian American Activism

Before the alarming escalation in anti-AAPI xenophobia resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, there was similar backlash decades prior. The backlash included the murder of 27-year-old Chinese American Vincent Chin in 1982. This year marks the 40th anniversary of his death. From then until now, journalist and activist Helen Zia has been front and center in leading AAPI advocacy and she’s seen it all. Join us for a panel discussion as Helen shares her experience and observations on 40+ years of AAPI resistance, how far we’ve come since Vincent’s death, and the work we have left to do to achieve justice and equity.

VUGlobalCitizens Graduation Recognition Celebration

Join the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion on Tuesday, May 10th for the 2022 VUGlobalCitizens Identity Initiative Graduation Recognition Celebration! We hope to celebrate all graduating students, including undergraduate, graduate, and professional, from Vanderbilt who identify as International students. There are two components to this celebration: a virtual ceremony and a following in-person reception.

Vanderbilt Out of the Darkness Campus Walk

The Vanderbilt Out of the Darkness Walk aims to bring awareness to suicide and benefit suicide prevention. This 2-mile walk hopes to engage our campus in the fight to prevent suicide, the second leading cause of death among people ages 15-24. This event is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites campus by providing a space to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. Register Here.

International Institute of Restorative Practices Training

Are you curious about restorative practices? Eager to learn how to embody restorative philosophies and practices in your personal and professional life? Join us for an International Institute of Restorative Practices (IIRP) training on March 26 + April 9 (via zoom).

We will engage in IIRP’s “Introduction to Restorative Practices” and “Using Circles Effectively.” This training typically costs $450, but we are offering discounted rates for both students ($30 for both days) and faculty/community members ($50 for both days).

LFG Film Panel

Vanderbilt will host a virtual panel discussion of the documentary film LFG  as part of Vanderbilt University’s Women’s History Month celebration.

LFG follows current and former American professional soccer players as they sue the United States Soccer Federation for pay discrimination.

The panel discussion will feature:

  • Simone Charley, Angel City Football Club
  • Sheila Gibson, HCA Healthcare and Nashville Sports Council
  • Joni Hersch, Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair and professor of law and economics
  • Sharon Shields, interim director, Susan Gray School, longtime women’s sports advocate and 2022 SEC Title IX Trailblazer

Narrative Circles

The Narrative Circles approach is distinguished by principles and practices of narrative theory intended to create a shared exploration where each individual’s multi-storied self is affirmed. A welcoming and safe space is created for affirmation and connection across lines of difference so that we learn to take a values-based approach to how we exist and interact with each other. The workshops also provide an opportunity for professional development, and anyone participating in 3 or more sessions will receive a certificate. Dinner will be provided, so please be sure to RSVP!

The circles will be held on March 29 and April 12.

Nutrition 301: Nourishing Heads & Hearts

Nutrition 301: Food and the Environment: Sustainable Nutrition Practices

While it might come to mind first, impact on the environment isn’t the only component of a sustainable diet. The complex idea of sustainability includes social, nutritional, cultural, and economic factors in addition to environmental ones. This session seeks to highlight these considerations and discuss potential dietary changes that can support your health and longevity while lessening the burden on the environment. Lunch will be provided for registrants.

COMPASS Check-ins are Circles of Mindful Presence, Awareness, Support and Strength. There is a lot going on in our world today, and it is easy to feel overwhelmed or need a way to process. We are providing a safe space for students to reflect, breathe deeply, get centered, and align our heads and our hearts.
