THIS WEEK:

Peabody Research Spotlight (PRS)

In 2020-21, we launched the Peabody Research Spotlight (PRS) series. The PRS is designed to showcase research conducted by faculty and PhD students at Peabody College, and to facilitate and strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations. The series is open to prospective Peabody PhD students as well. The series was a success and we will continue the PRS this year. Given the uncertainly with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the first PRS for the year will be held virtually.

The session will consist of presentations by the Directors of Graduate Studies (DGS) representing all 5 Peabody departments. Each presenter will provide a brief overview (5-7 minutes) of their PhD program, highlighting specific offerings that current and/or prospective students may not know about. This session is especially geared toward new Peabody PhD students (1st and 2nd year PhD students), but will also be of interest to prospective students hoping to learn more about the exciting PhD offerings at Peabody. Each presentation will be followed by a facilitated, brief Q&A period.

Speakers:

Community Research and Action: Dr. Brian Christens

Leadership Policy and Organization: Dr. Sean Corcoran

Psychology and Human Development: Dr. David Cole

Special Education: Dr. Robert Hodapp

Teaching and Learning: Dr. Kevin Leander

Monday, September 20

Spaces are created for reflection, deep listening, and meaningful conversations where you learn to trust your own wisdom and align your inner life with your outer work in the world. RSVP here.

The 3-session fall series of Circle of Trust® experiences are designed to foster personal and professional renewal by offering the time and space to:
• pause, disconnect from technology, and be still
• explore where you are on your journey
• acknowledge and honor both struggles and successes
• witness and be witnessed; listen and be listened to
• learn to ask open and honest questions and realign your soul and role

Faculty Facetime with Professors Kelly Slay and Joanne Golann

Join us for our first Faculty FaceTime of the semester with Joanne Golann and Kelly Slay! Dr. Golann is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Education, in the Department of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations. In her new book, Scripting the Moves: Culture & Control in a “No-Excuses” Charter School (Princeton University Press, 2021), she draws from 18 months of fieldwork inside a high-performing school to examine how the school’s rigid structures prepare students with the skills they need for college. Dr. Slay is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education and Public Policy also in the Department of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations. Two of Dr. Slay’s current projects explore the relationship between enrollment management practices in elite contexts and the college choice decisions and transition experiences of Black students and students from low-income backgrounds, and she recently launched a new study that examines how the myriad disruptions caused by COVID-19 shape Black high school students’ college-going process and enrollment decisions. Join us as Drs. Golann and Slay share about their research and their journeys in academia.
