Alumni PATH Dialogue with Norman Merrifeld
Join us for virtual lunchtime conversations to learn more about Peabody alumni and dive into their unique journeys to and from Peabody. Our PATH Dialogue Series (Purpose, Authenticity, Transformation, & Head/Heart) provides a space for students, faculty, staff, and administrators to share and be inspired by the diverse “paths” of Peabody alumni through storytelling, dialogue, and reflection.
Norman Merrifield, 2012 Learning, Diversity, and Urban Studies (LDUS) alum and founder of 808Education (808ed.org) will kick off our first PATH Dialogue of the semester. 808Education collaborates with schools to provide innovative professional development opportunities by customizing and individualizing trainings for each district and school so that “every engagement feels like a favorite song.”
With a background in audio engineering, Norman weaves music into all of his presentations and uses rhythm and sound to engage participants in unique ways. 808Education invites schools, teachers, and leaders to “find their beat with welcoming, engaging, and optimistic trainings that cultivate a fruitful culture!”

Peabody Research Spotlight (PRS)
In 2020-21, we launched the Peabody Research Spotlight (PRS) series. The PRS is designed to showcase research conducted by faculty and PhD students at Peabody College, and to facilitate and strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations. The series is open to prospective Peabody PhD students as well. The series was a success and we will continue the PRS this year. Given the uncertainly with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the first PRS for the year will be held virtually.
The session will consist of presentations by the Directors of Graduate Studies (DGS) representing all 5 Peabody departments. Each presenter will provide a brief overview (5-7 minute) of their PhD program, highlighting specific offerings that current and/or prospective students may not know about. This session is especially geared toward new Peabody PhD students (1st and 2nd year PhD students), but will also be of interest to prospective students hoping to learn more about the exciting PhD offerings at Peabody. Each presentation will be followed by a facilitated, brief Q&A period.
Speakers:
Community Research and Action: Dr. Brian Christens
Leadership Policy and Organization: Dr. Sean Corcoran
Psychology and Human Development: Dr. David Cole
Special Education: Dr. Robert Hodapp
Teaching and Learning: Dr. Kevin Leander

Sympathetic Magic: Works of Faith, Healing and Transformation
Throughout history and across the planet, people have invariably created objects promoting faith, healing and transformation. Sympathetic Magic presents objects from Vanderbilt University Collections alongside works by modern and contemporary artists, in acknowledgement of the steadfast and uniquely human belief in the transformative power of art.
Historical artifacts on view—ranging from votives and tomb objects to divination systems from China, Africa and the American South—diverge widely in origin and intent, but embody a shared investment in physical objects as agents of metaphysical change.
