THIS WEEK:

Panel Discussion of Picture a Scientist

The Vanderbilt University community is invited to an upcoming panel discussion of the documentary Picture a Scientist. Co-sponsored by the Provost’s WAVE Council, the Margaret Cuninggim Women’s Center, and the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries.

Picture A Scientist chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all. The Vanderbilt community can watch the film through the university library at the following link.

Improving Early-Childhood Human Development: Experimental Evidence from India by Dr. Alejandro Ganimian

Alejandro Ganimian is a professor at New York University. He was joined by Karthik Muralidharan and Christopher R. Walters in this work.

Abstract: Despite growing interest in improving early-childhood education in developing countries, there is little evidence on cost-effective ways of meeting this goal at scale. We used a large-scale randomized experiment to study the impact of adding an extra worker focused on education in the world’s largest public early-childhood program: India’s Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS). Doing so doubled net instructional time and led to a 0.29 SDs and 0.46 SDs increase in math and language test scores after 18 months. Rates of stunting and severe malnutrition were also lower in the treatment group, likely reflecting the freeing up of time of existing workers to focus more on nutrition-related tasks. We estimate that the increase in the present discounted value of participants’ earnings due to the intervention’s test-score gains will be 12 times its cost. Incorporating nutrition gains boosts the projected benefit/cost ratio to between 16 and 20.

Narrative Circles

The Narrative Circles approach is distinguished by principles and practices of narrative theory intended to create a shared exploration where each individual’s multi-storied self is affirmed. Faculty Face Time with Professor Georgene Troseth

Dr. Georgene Troseth is a professor of psychology at Peabody College. A developmental psychologist, she has published research articles about very young children’s symbolic development and their understanding of pictures, video images, and video chat as sources of information. One focus of her research is the importance of adult support or “scaffolding” for very young children’s learning from traditional and digital media including e-books and educational applications, and for their understanding of digital images that blend fantasy with reality (such as Snapchat filters and Pokémon Go). As a first-gen student, her unusual path to academia provide her a unique lens for thinking about work-life balance. Graduate student Nick Tippenhauer will facilitate the conversation.
