Psychology & Human Development Diversity Speaker Series with Richard Prather

Join us for a talk with Richard Prather, Ph.D., University of Maryland, entitled: Reconstructing the Study of Human Cognition by Abandoning Cognitive Universalism.

The study of human cognition is a prominent part of psychology and related disciplines. While the modern approach begun during the Cognitive Revolution has been seemingly successful, it is not without its problems. Prather addresses five concerns with how human cognition is studied and proposes a reconstruction of how researchers study human cognition by implementing a combination of methodological approaches and theoretical positions.

Community-Engaged Design: Equitable Processes in Practice

A key challenge of community research in action is unpacking the consequences of systemic oppression and structures that have been designed to advantage some over others. While participatory and democratic methods of research and design seek to empower communities through intentional, community-engaged practices, what can we learn by focusing on the design processes with those at the margins, broadly defined? What practices, outcomes, and resources are important for researchers to consider in this regard, especially when it comes to equity?

This panel brings together community design experts from three major U.S. cities—Nashville, Boston, and Washington D.C.—in conversation to address these key questions with explicit implications for researchers.

Faculty Face Time with Professor Georgene Troseth

Dr. Georgene Troseth is a professor of psychology at Peabody College. A developmental psychologist, she has published research articles about very young children’s symbolic development and their understanding of pictures, video images, and video chat as sources of information. One focus of her research is the importance of adult support or “scaffolding” for very young children’s learning from traditional and digital media including e-books and educational applications, and for their understanding of digital images that blend fantasy with reality (such as Snapchat filters and Pokémon Go). As a first-gen student, her unusual path to academia provide her a unique lens for thinking about work-life balance. Graduate student Ashli-Ann Douglas will facilitate the conversation.
