Message from David Wood: At the outbreak of war on this day, I can find no more eloquent words than those of Robert Byrd on Mar. 19: “I weep for our country.”

“The reality is that Britain is being asked to embark on a war without agreement in any of the international bodies of which we are a leading partner — not NATO, not the European Union and, now, not the Security Council.

To end up in such diplomatic weakness is a serious reverse. Only a year ago, we and the United States were part of a coalition against terrorism that was wider and more diverse than I would ever have imagined possible. History will be astonished at the diplomatic miscalculations that led so quickly to the disintegration of that powerful coalition.”

–excerpt of Robin Cook’s resignation speech as leader of the House of Commons. The entire speech, which won an unprecedented standing ovation, can be read at this CNN site or heard at this BBC site.

Upcoming event: GATHERING AT FEDERAL BUILDING. STANDING UNITED FOR PEACE.

Candlelight Vigil tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Nashville Peace and Justice Center.

In an open letter to 10 Downing Street, published in the Guardian newspaper, a group of sixteen academic lawyers have argued that taking action without a new, clear United Nations mandate “will seriously undermine the international rule of law”. Here is the full text.

“The threatened war against Iraq will be a breach of the United Nations Charter and hence of international law unless it is authorised by a new and unambiguous resolution of the security council,” writes Mark Littman in another Guardian article.

A collection of photos from the antiwar protests around the world during the weekend Feb. 15-16: Images for Peace: The World says No to War

“Both just war theory and international law say that states may resort to war only in self-defense. Iraq has not attacked the United States, and claims that it is about to do so are not credible.” –from the American Philosophical Association’s recent resolution concerning the war.

Suggested by Vereen Bell, Professor of English:

Waking Early Sunday Morning (c.1967)

No weekends for the gods now. Wars
flicker, earth licks its open sores,
fresh breakage, fresh promotions, chance
assassinations, no advance.
Only man thinning out his kind
sounds through the Sabbath noon, the blind
swipe of the pruner and his knife
busy about the tree of life. . .
Pity the planet, all joy gone
from this sweet volcanic cone;
peace to our children when they fall
in small war on the heels of small
war–until the end of time
to police the earth, a ghost
orbiting forever lost
in our monotonous sublime.

Robert Lowell
