   Growth Rate
    Big ideas

Students begin by studying growth qualitatively (for example, through observations and drawings that show shape). To extend to quantitative studies in this context, students can investigate the growth rate of roots or seedlings. Because these plant parts are small, special tools, like a Video Flex® camera, helps the class record changes and measure the roots or seedlings as they grow. Children's background with graphing data and/or calculating rate will influence how well prepared they are for these activities.

    Children's Way of Thinking

Initially, students are interested in how fast the seedlings and roots grow, but they have to develop ways to track and measure these changes. Using tools such as clear agar and grids or scales, they can explore rates of growth of these small structures.
