Graduate Department of Religion F2P2 Equivalencies

Professional Development

  • Workshops

    • Attend 6 hours of workshops and answer reflective questions.

      GDR Teaching of Religion class on "Teaching Portfolios" counts for 2 hours toward the Professional Development F2P2 workshop hours.

      GDR Professional Trajectory Workshops on "Academic Papers" and "Academic Publishing" count for 2 hours each toward the Professional Development F2P2 workshop hours.

      GDR students need to fill out Form 1: Documentation for Workshops for each class/workshop attended to earn workshop credit. Please place these in your notebook.

  • Mentoring

    • Interview faculty about their roles and responsibilities.

      GDR participants need to fulfill this requirement. There is no equivalent to this for transfer credit. Please record the questions and answers to the interview and place it in your notebook.

  • Hands-On Experience

    • Attend department, faculty senate, and committee meetings.

      GDR participants need to complete this activity and fill out Form 2: Event Attendance Form.

    • Present research at disciplinary conference.

      GDR participants who have participated in the Colloquium or have presented academic papers at conferences need only include a copy of the abstract and the name of the conference attended in their notebooks

    • With cohort, hold mock interviews and develop teaching portfolios, cover letters, and CV.

      GDR participants who have attended both the "Interviewing" and "CV Creation" GDR workshops and have participated in the mock interviews and CV hands-on experiences in these workshops need only include the CV and a write-up of the interviewing experience (questions and answers) in their notebooks.

  • Partner Institution Visits

    • Interview host faculty about their roles and responsibilities.

    • Write one reflection paper on partner institution visits.

      The GDR program does not have an equivalent to this experience. All F2P2 participants need to do these activities and include the required documentation,

Teaching & Learning

  • Workshops

    • Attend 6 hours of workshops and answer reflective questions.

      GDR Teaching of Religion classes exempts the F2P2 participant out of the Teaching and Learning F2P2 workshop hours, giving the participant 20 hours total in this session and completing the Teaching & Learning requirements.

      GDR students need to fill out Form 1: Documentation for Workshops for each class/workshop attended to earn workshop credit. Please place these in your notebook.

  • Mentoring

    • Arrange for supervised teaching and reflection with a faculty mentor.

      If GDR participant has been a teaching assistant and was observed by a faculty member during this time, that counts for credit. Please complete Form 2: Event Attendance Form.

    • Observe a class taught by VU faculty and discuss.

      GDR participants must complete this requirement. You can observe a GDR, Div, or any other class as long as you obtain permission in advance. After doing so, please meet with the faculty member and record the questions and answers that arose from this discussion.

    • Meet with F2P2 peer to observe each other's teaching and review each other's reflective papers on the mentoring experience.

      GDR participants who participated in the "Teaching of Religion" class which required the microteaching (lecture) and peer review have fulfilled this requirement. Please write down the questions and answers that arose during this time as well as the results from the peer review.

    • Arrange a videotape consultation with the CFT.

      GDR students who have been videotaped while TAing have completed this requirement. Simply fill out Form 2: Event Attendance Form and place it in your notebook.

    • After these four items are completed, write a reflective essay about what you have learned about teaching and learning through the mentoring experience.

  • Hands-On Experience

    • Develop lesson plan and teach for 5 hours. (Include student assessment and self-evaluation.)

      GDR participants who have been TAs have fulfilled this requirement. Each participant will need to include the lesson plans (or, for discussion leaders, your list of questions for the day) as well as student assessments and your own reflections on the experience. The student evaluations portion can be fulfilled in several different ways. Please see your MTF for details.

    • Facilitate teaching brownbag for department, partner institution, or CFT.

      GDR participants who have enrolled and presented a case in the "Practicum on the Teaching of Religious Studies" have automatically fulfilled this requirement (as long as s/he facilitated the case discussion). Please include a list of participants, a case write-up, and your reflections on the experience in your notebook. You can also fulfill this requirement by organizing an F2P2 or GradSTEP workshop.

  • Partner Institution Visits

    • Meet with and observe host faculty teaching classes.

      The GDR program does not have an equivalent to this experience. All F2P2 participants need to do these activities and include the required documentation

World of the University

  • Workshops

    • Attend 6 hours of workshops and answer reflective questions.

      GDR students need to attend 6 hours worth of F2P2 workshops that fall under the World of the University category to fulfill this requirement.

      GDR students need to fill out Form 1: Documentation for Workshops for each class/workshop attended to earn workshop credit. Please place these in your notebook.

  • Mentoring

    • Develop questions and conduct interview of someone from an administrative unit on campus.

      There is no equivalent for this in the present GDR program. Please complete this task and include your interview questions and responses in your notebook.

  • Hands-On Experience

    • Develop and facilitate a university community service project.

      GDR participants who have taken their research into the community have fulfilled this requirement. Example: You can present your research in an unpaid venue (for instance, a synagogue or church class series - honoraria are OK) and spend 10 hours on it in total (including prep time).

  • Partner Institution Visits

    • Meet students and administrators from the host schools.

      The GDR program does not have an equivalent to this experience. All F2P2 participants need to do these activities and include the required documentation

Technological Initiatives

  • Activities

    • Complete at least one activity to demonstrate a working knowledge of technology in disciplinary scholarship, teaching/learning, and higher education.

      GDR participants who have worked with Prometheus have fulfilled this requirement. Simply place documentation in your notebook as appropriate

    • Participate in a brownbag discussion on technology.

      GDR students who have attended the "Teaching of Religion" session on "Technology in the Classroom" have fulfilled this requirement. Simply complete Form 2: Event Attendance Form and place it in your notebook

    • Develop a Web site documenting teaching and research.

      GDR students who have attended the "Website Technology" workshop in the GDR series have completed this requirement. Simply continue to update and fill out your website.
