F2P2 at Vanderbilt was designed after careful research of similar programs at other institutions of higher education. These included Preparing Future Faculty (PFF), a nationwide program whose goal is to provide "inclusive and comprehensive graduate preparation for developing the future professoriate," and several independent Graduate Teaching Certificate programs. Participants in these programs indicate that engaging in professional development activities can provide an edge in a highly competitive academic job market. Using the plans of these other programs, the Center for Teaching extracted the most valuable assets and designed F2P2 to be a comprehensive program focusing on the salient issues in academia tailored to fit the specific needs of the graduate student, professional student, and postdoc populations at Vanderbilt.

F2P2 offers workshops, mentoring, hands-on experience, and field trips to partner institutions in each of these fundamental aspects of university life:
