Writing South Asian: Reading and Discussion with Piyali Bhattacharya and Sheba Karim<\/h1>\n

As part of South Asia week 2019, join us for a reading by Vanderbilt Writers in Residence\u00a0Piyali Bhattacharya<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Sheba Karim<\/a>\u00a0followed by a discussion about the connections between writing and identity, specifically South Asian identity.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0The Lies That Bind: Rethinking Identity<\/em>, Kwame Anthony Appiah writes that identities \u201ccan all become forms of confinement\u201d as much as they can \u201cgive contours to our freedom\u201d and \u201cconnect the small scale of our lives alongside our kith and kin with larger movements, causes, and concerns\u201d (218). We will talk with our authors about their own journey as writers, about the role that South Asian identity\u2014in all its complexities\u2014plays in how and what they write, and about the advice they have for aspiring authors.<\/p>\n

Piyali Bhattacharya is a fiction writer, essayist, and editor of the anthology\u00a0Good Girls Marry Doctors: South Asian American Daughters on Obedience and Rebellion<\/em>, which received several national prizes, including being named an \u201cAsian American Literary Achievement of 2016\u201d by NBC. She is currently at work on her first novel.<\/p>\n

Sheba Karim is the author of three novels:\u00a0Skunk Girl<\/em>,\u00a0That Thing We Call a Heart<\/em>, and\u00a0Mariam Sharma Hits the Road<\/em>. Her writing has been featured in\u00a0580 Split<\/em>,\u00a0Asia Literary Review<\/em>,\u00a0India Today<\/em>,\u00a0Literary Hub<\/em>,\u00a0Off Assignment<\/em>,\u00a0Shenandoah<\/em>,\u00a0South Asian Review<\/em>,\u00a0The Rumpus<\/em>,\u00a0Time Out Delhi<\/em>\u00a0and in several anthologies in the United States and India.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
