Get a new perspective on writing. Get to know a professor in a fun, informal setting. Those are three reasons you should attend \u201cDinner and a Draft,\u201d coming up on Tuesday, March 26 from 6:00-7:30 pm, at the Dean of the Ingram Commons Residence!<\/p>\n<p>Our faculty guest for the spring semester will be Dr. Joanne Golann. Dr. Golann is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Education at Vanderbilt. Trained as a sociologist and an ethnographer, she seeks to understand how culture shapes educational policy and practice.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Golann is currently working on a book project<em>, Making No Excuses: Urban School Reform and the Logic of Control<\/em>, based on 18 months of fieldwork inside a high-performing \u201cno-excuses\u201d charter school. In the book, she considers what it takes\u2014and what it costs\u2014to equalize opportunities for low-income students of color. She is also a lead researcher on the <em>New Jersey Families Study<\/em>, an innovative two-week home video-ethnography project that explores how families, across race and social class, build skills and knowledge in their children in their earliest years.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re invited! Join the Writing\u00a0Studio and our host Interim Dean Melchor-Barz as we share a meal, talk about the challenges and rewards of getting words on the page, and get to know Professor Golann.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s going to be a fantastic evening.
