The Spirit of Gold
Come be a part of one of the largest and most visible student organizations at Vanderbilt University! Entertaining tens of thousands of fans with their spirited, high-energy performances, the Spirit of Gold Marching Band enjoys a growing reputation as one of the great collegiate marching bands in the country. Their repertoire runs the gamut from cool jazz to today's contemporary hits, classic favorites and music from the stage. Membership is open to all students from Vanderbilt, Belmont, Lipscomb, Trevecca Nazarene, Vol State, and Nashville State colleges and universities.
Band rehearsals are scheduled on every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 - 6:30 pm. There will also be rehearsals Friday evening from 5:30 - 7:00 pm if there is a game that weekend that the SOG is performing at. Rehearsals on game days depend on the kickoff time. Practices are held at either McGugin Athletic Fields, the indoor field house in the Student Recreation Center, or on Dudley Field at Vanderbilt Stadium. These rehearsals provide an enjoyable change of pace with minimal time involvement for the busy college student. No "extra" rehearsals are scheduled.
Band Camp is held a week before classes begin and includes extensive training in marching and playing at the college level. In addition to regular rehearsals, there are lots of social activities planned throughout the week to give students a chance to relax and meet new friends! The band's early arrival on campus provides each individual an opportunity to get settled in the residence halls, rent books, make tons of new friends, and adjust to a new environment and a new independence before classes begin. Attendance at camp is mandatory.
Currently, there are no membership auditions for woodwinds and brass. All students will complete a simple part-placement audition during camp.
Membership in the front ensemble of Spirit of Gold Drum Line is selected by audition. Auditions will happen during band camp in the fall semester.
Color Guard Auditions
There will also be auditions for the colorguard. While a live audition is encouraged, students may also submit a high definition video for consideration. Interested students should contact the Band Office at (615) 343-2263 or send an email to receive information. Auditions will happen during band camp in the fall semester.
Feature Twirler Auditions
The Feature Twirler participates in all home games, parades, playoff games, events on and off campus, and occasionally at basketball halftime. Two to four spots are available per season. These performers twirl up to four batons and are expected to do 3-turns and toss illusions. Interested students should contact the Band Office before July 1st at (615) 343-2263 or send an email to receive information.
As part of the SEC, the Spirit of Gold travels to a few off-campus events each year. These events usually include an away football game (either whole group or a smaller pep band). Last year, the Spirit of Gold traveled to Shreveport, LA to cheer on the football team at the Independence Bowl. Travel and food is provided at no cost to the student.
Members of the Spirit of Gold Marching Band pay a $55 band fee each year, which covers t-shirt, band banquet, uniform cleaning, some social events, and flip-folders.
Drum Majors and Student Leadership Staff
Drum Majors and Student Leadership staff are selected at the end of the fall season from the ranks of the Spirit of Gold Marching Band. Selection is based on experience, rehearsal discipline, conducting ability, personality, and leadership potential. All candidates must have completed one season of membership before applying.
The honorary band sorority, Tau Beta Sigma, is very active throughout the year providing special service to the band and supporting its needs.
