Contest Format and Awards

Contest Format

The competition is divided into the following classes:

Small Division

Class A: 40 or fewer musicians

Class AA: 41 - 60 musicians

Large Division

Class AAA: 61 - 80 musicians

Class AAAA: 81+ musicians

Bands have the option to compete in a higher class and may do so by indicating on the entry form, pending approval by the VMI Executive Committee. Additionally, musicians are classified as individuals playing instruments.

PARTICIPATION PLAQUES

A personalized plaque each band receives to commemorate their performance at VMI

BAND AWARDS  

Trophies given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each division

CAPTION AWARDS

Trophies awarded in each division to the highest scores in the captions of Auxiliary and Percussion. Field Commanders will also receive recognition  

SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE

Plaques given to acknowledge all bands scoring above an 80.0

MOST ENTERTAINING BAND

An award signifying showmanship, selected by a panel of honorary judges

MOST SPIRITED BOOSTERS

An award recognizing the enthusiasm of a band’s supporters, selected by a panel of honorary judges

GRAND CHAMPION

The Grand Champion trophy is presented to the highest scoring band, regardless of classification.

RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION

The Reserve Grand Champion trophy is presented to the second highest scoring band, regardless of classification
