Image-Guided Kidney Surgery
Over the past decade there has been considerable recognition of the importance of preserving renal function through surgical techniques for nephron-sparing (kidney preserving) surgery. However, nephron-sparing surgeries dramatically increase the demands on the surgeon and intraoperative risk: requiring consideration of vascular control, minimization of ischemic damage, precise resection of the diseased kidney volume, and reconstruction of the kidney and collecting system. We are developing a system which interactively provides information to the surgeon about their tool’s proximity to lesion boundaries, blood vessels or sensitive structures such as the kidney collection system. This information is presented in real time, in three dimensions and updates continuously during surgery.
