Engineering Improved Surgical Guidance for Breast Lumpectomy

Approximately 50% of women eligible for lumpectomy choose to undergo a mastectomy due to surgical uncertainties. Surgical guidance is difficult because the breast undergoes large deformations during surgery coupled with the fact that diagnostic imaging occurs in a completely different orientation than surgical presentation. The underlying hypothesis of this project is that appropriate preoperative MR imaging protocols, interventional imaging methods, and spatial localizers can be combined with visualization, and computational methods to improve the likelihood of achieving a successful lumpectomy while maximizing cosmetic outcome.
