Computational Modeling for Enabling Image-Guided Liver Surgery
With respect to treating liver cancer, aggressive surgical resection has been shown to have impressive 5-year survival rates. Improving the safety of those procedures would be a marked step forward. To accomplish this, there has been an attempt to translate image-guided surgical techniques to the abdomen environment. Similar to the brain, but much more dramatic, intraoperative deformations of the organ have challenged the translation of these methods. This project couples the use of laser-based methodologies to computer models to measure and correct shape changes to facilitate image-guided therapies.
