VISE affiliates Robert F. Labadie, Professor of Otolaryngology and J. Michael Fitzpatrick, Professor of Computer Science, Emeritus, have published “Image-Guided Surgery: Fundamentals and Clinical Applications in Otolaryngology”.

Image-guided surgery (IGS) is the term used for surgical procedures in which the surgeon employs tracked surgical instruments in conjunction with preoperative or intraoperative images in order to navigate during the procedure. IGS is part of the wider field of computer-assisted surgery. Primarily used by rhinologists during sinus surgery, it is also often used by skull-based surgeons in conjunction with neurosurgeons. Even though it is widely utilized, surgeons’ often don’t have an adequate understanding of the technology to appreciate its strengths and weaknesses.

This book was written to overcome the knowledge gap to educate practicing surgeons as well as provide an introduction to the field for engineers.
