My research at the Vanderbilt Biophotonics enter is focused on the extraction and clinical application of attenuation coefficients (AC) from optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. One criticism of traditional OCT images is that they only provide morphological information about the tissue. Quantitative analysis of tissue properties would facilitate more accurate differentiation between diseased tissue and normal tissue. Light attenuation coefficient, which is a function of underlying medium properties, enables such analysis and can provide quantitative assessment and differentiation of dissimilar tissue types. My work aims to improve current AC extraction methods and apply AC measurements on diseased tissue diagnosis. The project I am currently working on is early detection of glaucoma.
