    Project Summary

eoeAt the Vanderbilt Biophotonics Center, I have two projects focusing on characterizing pediatric middle ear infections (MEE) and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) using Raman spectroscopy. The goal of the MEE project is  (1) to develop a hand-held optical device to detect biochemical markers of wildtype, mutant and resistant strains of bacteria that cause otitis media (OM) and (2) to develop an assay that will track these biomarkers in real-time in vivo for diagnosis and monitoring of infection to inform clinical management decisions. For the EoE project, the aim is to identify biomarkers associated with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) in pediatric patients and develop a rapid diagnostic device to detect this disease in a clinical setting again using Raman spectroscopy to identify the key biochemical features of inflammation relating to active versus inactive EoE, in real-time in vivo, for diagnosis and monitoring of treatment.
