Buerhaus Named to IOM Committee

Peter Buerhaus, PhD, RN, Valere Potter Distinguished Professor of Nursing and director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Health Workforce Studies at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, has been named to the Institute of Medicine’s Committee for Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education.

The Committee is co-chaired by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Donald Berwick, MD, MPP, and Project HOPE’s Gail Wilensky, PhD.   The committee members include representatives from academic health centers and private and federal health systems as well as leading health organizations.

This committee has a twofold mission during the next 21 months.  First, they will assess current regulation, financing, content, governance and organization of U.S. graduate medical education (GME).  Second, they will make recommendations to modify GME to produce a future physician workforce care system focusing on high quality preventive, acute and chronic care across diverse populations.

Buerhaus, a VUSN faculty member, has conducted a significant amount of research during the last 15 years that has informed policymakers, educators and health care executives about trends in the nursing and physician workforce.
