Forty years of senior management health care services responsibilities: strategy, financing, development, operations, sales and marketing, program development, turn-around, and M&A.  Founder, Chairman & CEO, FOCUS Healthcare Management, a specialty workers’ compensation managed care company sold to United Healthcare; Founder, Chairman & CEO, Meridian Occupational Healthcare, an employer-sponsored, onsite/near site provider of healthcare services, sold to Walgreens, then spun out by PE as Premise Health—now the country’s largest onsite/nearsite & telehealth provider to Fortune 500 companies; CEO, Urology Healthcare Group, (dba CIMplify), a specialty physician practice management, revenue cycle management, ancillary services and facilities development/management company; CEO, Urologix, a publicly-traded medical device company; LP, Nashville Capital Network; and, Nashville Executive Network, Shore Capital Partners.

Career responsibilities have included specialty pharmacy program development; prepaid health plan development, management, turn-around; specialty managed care program innovation, development and implementation/scaling; HCIT innovation and deployment; ancillary services development and management in Stark compliant structures; business process outsourcing; cost containment; innovative “value proposition healthcare” (eg. Medical tourism/off-shore surgical centers of excellence); physician practice management (multisite, multistate); and, medical devices.  At the Nashville Entrepreneur Center, selected as a Master Mentor; now a Vanderbilt University innovation center (dba The Wond’ry) Master Mentor; and, Entrepreneurial Advisory Committee, Vanderbilt Univerity Center for Technology Transfer and Commercialization.  Undergraduate awards include Upjohn Achievement Award for undergraduate research and McKesson & Robbins President’s Award.

Q. What excites you most about the Wond’ry?

A. The intellect and creativity introduced by all who seek to discover, develop and deploy.

Q. What do you feel are the most important skills you have to offer in your role as a mentor?

A. I listen intently.

Q. What has been your proudest moment in your career?

A. Assisting young, inexperienced staff to fully appreciate their skills, desires and commitment. Today, reflecting on the accomplishments of three CEO’s who began working with me in entry level positions. I have also turned around companies or assisted in recovering them from the brink.

Q. What has surprised you the most about your job?

A. The job description is seldom accurate regarding problems and priorities.

Q. If you could do everything over again, would you make the same career choices?

A. Absolutely not.

Q. In your opinion, what is the most important quality for success?

A. Integrity, discipline, focus, commitment…..being purpose-driven and results-oriented.

Q. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A. A forest ranger.
