G.L. Black

G.L. provides strategic leadership for Student Affairs to support and enhance the student experience and advance the University’s mission of teaching, research, and service.

G.L. serves on the leadership team for the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and oversees the operations and personnel of the Student Affairs division, including the Belonging and Communities, Community Standards and Student Support, Housing and Residential Experience, and Student Engagement and Leadership areas. In his role, G.L. advocates for students through collaboration with administrative and academic units to plan, develop, sustain, and improve co-curricular programs supporting student success. He designs safe, secure, accessible, and inclusive environments promoting students’ academic success, wellbeing, and personal and professional development, and fosters academic and social networks through which students develop as intentional learners and global citizens. G.L. also advises senior leadership, faculty, staff, and students on matters concerning student life, student organizations, student services and programs, and policy development.  

G.L. received his B.A. from the University of Florida, his J.D. from Harvard Law School, and his M.Ed. from Vanderbilt’s Peabody College. He began his career as a litigator at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP in New York with a focus on criminal defense and investigations, securities, labor and employment, and antitrust work, and also practiced at Shutts & Bowen LLP in Florida prior to coming to Vanderbilt.
