Amy M. Johnson (she, her, hers), is assistant provost for immersion and experiential learning, faculty head of Warren College, and professor of the practice in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Johnson is an alumna of Tufts University where she earned a bachelor of arts in Spanish and African Diasporic Studies.  She earned her master’s and doctorate at Duke University with a focus on pre-colonial West African History, early colonial Caribbean History, and comparative slave studies.

Prior to joining the provost office at Vanderbilt, Johnson served as the Executive Director of Core Curriculum and an associate professor of history at Elon University. As the Executive Director, she oversaw first-year foundations courses, the common reading, the distribution in the arts & sciences, integrative core capstones, and experiential learning.  Johnson regularly taught class on Poverty and Social Justice, Caribbean History, and Slavery and Resistance.  She has led travel courses with students to Brazil, Costa Rica, Ghana, South Africa, and Washington, D.C.

As assistant provost Johnson oversees Immersion Vanderbilt and Experiential Learning units. She is passionate about equity, access, and social justice and looks forward to eventually teaching poverty and social justice classes at Vanderbilt.

Johnson is a North Carolina native who enjoys reading and traveling. She lives in Warren with her husband, Vincent, three children—Elijah, Eden, and Isaac—and her dogs Griffin and Pippen - and a gerbil named Cinnamon.
