October/November Religious Life on Campus

Posted by on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 in News.

Each month, we will take quick note of the various and wonderful events that our various religious organizations have put on throughout campus. Some of the most fundamental and beautiful examples of religious life on college campuses come in the work that our ministries do every week and small events that are put on by way of our student groups. While large scale programs, concerts, and lectures are a great addition to the work of these ministries and groups, we must make sure that all of this tremendous work is seen.

With that being said, here are some of the events that have taken place over the past month. If you would like to know more about these groups or their events, come to our website and links for each group can be found.

Living Memorial and Teach-in on Racialized Violence in America

Hosted by: Vanderbilt Divinity School

Wednesday, October 29 2014, 9:00 AM to Thursday, October 30 2014, 6:30 PM

Library Lawn and Divinity School Courtyard

411 21st Ave South 37240

Since last summer seven different unarmed black men were killed by unarmed police officers. The senseless loss of life has changed our nation as the echoes of our countries racist history rears its head once again. Tomorrow the Divinity School will memorialize the victimes of extrajudicial killing and racialized violence with a tribte on the Library lawn and the Divinity School Courtyard.

It is very easy to look away or close our ears to the cries of the vulnerable, but as future leaders and people committed to justice it is our responsibility not only to see and hear, but to tell others. Though this kind of “ seeing” reopens wounds that we try so hard to heal, it is important to our development and integrity as a community, as the School of the Prophets, to rehearse these works once again, so that we might be changed by them and lead the way in becoming the community we desire to be.

Come reflect with us. Lament with us, Repent with us on Wednesday and Thursday as we consider racialized violence and injustice in America.

Living Memorial 9-6 pm
Ling Memorial Service 10:45 am-11:00 am
Teach-in on Racialized Violence in America 4-6:30 pm

Join as we make the campus speak out for justice!

This is an incredible opportunity for many of those in vulnerable communities, who feel voiceless, to have their voices heard, and for those who consider themselves allies to engage in the work of justice making creatively.

Religious Liberty: What it is, Why it Matters, How the Founders Intended to Protect it, and Threats to it Today

Hosted by: Federalist Society

Wednesday, October 29 2014, 12:10 PM to 1:00 PM in the Hyatt Room

The phrase “religious liberty” cannot be uttered without eliciting a strong response.  Some believe that it is a touchstone of our constitutional protections and is essential to the flourishing of a liberal society.  Others argue that is synonymous with discrimination and should be restricted in order to ensure grander notions of equality.  Regardless of one’s opinion on this topic, it is imperative to understand its origins and the role the Founders intended it to play within the American experiment.

Ryan T. Anderson of the Heritage Foundation comes to Vanderbilt Law School to provide a history of religious liberty as well as potential threats it faces within the near future.  Anderson’s broadcast and cable appearances include news programs on CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC. His work has been featured in or published by major newspapers and magazines, including  the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Washington Examiner, National Review, Weekly Standard and Christianity Today. It also has appeared in journals such as Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, First Things, Claremont Review of Books, New Atlantis, Touchstone, Books and Culture, The City and Human Life Review.
