 American Red Cross Lifeguarding R2017 Course

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Proof of online completion is required of candidates throughout the course sessions for class admittance.
Candidates must be at least 15 years of age on the last day of class and able to complete all prerequisite requirements for admittance to the course.  The class size is limited to 8 participants with a minimum of 3 participants for the class to make. A lifeguarding certification is valid for 2 years.

Fall Semester Dates - held in Rec Conference Room 2

  • 8/30/18 - 12-1:30 p.m.
  • 9/18/18 - 4-5:30 p.m.
  • 9/25/18 - 4-5:30 p.m.
  • 10/15/18 - 12-1:30 p.m.
  • 10/25/18 - 9:30-11 a.m.
  • 11/5/18 - 12-1:30 p.m.
  • 11/30/18 - 12-1:30 p.m.

 
Total Course Time:

  • 20 in-person hours
  • 7.5 online hours

Class Price:

(Price includes course materials: pocket mask, instructor and certification fees)

  • $200/VU student, employee or Rec member
  • $225/non-affiliate.

Course Prerequisites:

  • Swim continuously 300 yards using either front crawl or breaststroke.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes, using only legs.
  • Complete a timed event in 1 min. 40 secs (Goggles are NOT allowed)
  • Starting in water, swim 20 yards.
  • Surface dive 7-10 ft. to retrieve a 10lb object
  • Return to surface and swim 20 yds on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface.

 American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Course
(Adult/Child, Infant)

The Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED blended learning course prepares you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children and infants. The online portion features award winning simulation learning including an interactive experience that allows the participant to respond to real-world emergencies in a virtual setting. 

All participants have the opportunity to practice the skills that will prepare you for the instructor-led classroom skill session. Participants must complete the online portion and attend the IN PERSON skills session to obtain certification.  A CPR/AED and FA certification is valid for 2 years.

Fall Semester Dates

  • September 18 from 4pm-5:30pm
  • September 25 from 4pm-5:30pm
  • October 15 from 12pm-1:30pm
  • October 25 from 9:30am-11am
  • November 5 from 12pm-1:30pm
  • November 30 from 12pm-1:30pm

Total Course Time:

  • 2 hrs. 10 min. online hours
  • 2 in person hours

Class Price:

(Price includes course materials: face shield, instructor and certification fees)

  • $90 / VU student, faculty, staff, Rec member
  • $100 / non VU affiliates or non-members
