The Institute is conducting foundational AI research in natural language processing, computer vision, and machine learning, as well as in AI ethics. Building on these foundational advances, the Institute is conducting use-inspired AI research on narrative-centered learning environments with rich AI-driven virtual agents and powerful multimodal learning analytics to understand how students learn and collaborate in rich story-based problem scenarios. The Post-Doctoral researcher will primarily be working with Vanderbilt research team, constituting of faculty from Computer Science and the Peabody College of Education in conducting research on using multimodal analytics to analyze and interpret classroom, group, and individual student learning behaviors and performance from real classroom data. The researcher will also coordinate with researchers from the partner universities, North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Indiana University in advancing the research of the ENGAGE AI Institute.

Driven by a vision in which AI supports and extends the intelligence of teachers and learners, the NSF AI Institute for Engaged Learning (support by a $20 million NSF AI Institute grant) is designing, developing, and investigating AI-driven narrative-centered learning environments that create engaging story-based, collaborative problem-solving experiences.
